How to Take Care of Your BJJ Gi

February 28, 2020

Here're some tips on how you can take good care of your GI!

1. WASH INSIDE OUT

You can’t protect the outsides of your gi while rolling, at least do so during wash. This way, your gi’s patches, stitching and colour will last longer.

2. WASH IN COOL WATER

Even if you’re a germaphobe, warm/hot water might cause shrinkage, make stains set into the fabric and your gi colour may bleed/fade a lot faster.

3. HANG OR LINE DRY (unless you intend to shrink your gi, read here)

Hang your gi to dry indoors or outdoors but out of direct sunlight. Direct Sun and UV will drastically reduce the durability of your gi and cause serious damage to the integrity of the fabric. Avoid tumble drying and save the wear and tear for the mats.

4. DO NOT BLEACH or USE ANY DETERGENT WITH BLEACH

Bleach compromises the material, try organic oxidizer or a similar detergent to remove any stains.

5. DO NOT LEAVE SWEATY GI BALLED UP (wash soon after each use)

Try not to let blood, sweat, grease and dirt dry on your gi to prevent odor, for sanitary reasons and to prolong your gi's lifespan.

6. IDEALLY, WASH YOUR GI WITHOUT OTHER CLOTHES

This is the best practice in gi care as to ensure no other clothing can bleed onto the gi and that the gi is getting the best wash possible.

7. DO NOT OVERDOSE ON DETERGENT

Too much detergent that doesn't get rinsed out from the Gi will cause it to smell funky. Here's a method on how you can save your already funky smelling Gi.
